Ford has been producing cars and trucks in the UK for over ninety years now. In fact, Ford was the first foreign car maker to have an impact on the UK market. But as national wants and needs have dramatically shifted over the past few decades, Ford has been forced to redefine its goals in the UK.

Though the precise date is hard to pinpoint, sometime during the nineteen-nineties the wants and needs of American and European car owners began to move in opposite directions. While Americans started to demand larger, less fuel efficient vehicles like SUVS, consumers in the UK wanted small fuel-efficient, economy cars.

This shift caused headaches for the American carmaker as they were forced to design two distinct lines of cars, the so-called world cars for Europeans and their regular line for North Americans. The problem was further compounded when the world cars were dismissed as a flop in the North American market. Many of these cars had to be unloaded as a second hand Ford car .

But in spite of this financially challenging arrangement, Ford factories and production facilities in Europe have produced some of the most efficient and advanced models in the history of the company. For example, the Ford Escort was the company's first front-wheel drive vehicle.

The Ford name has also been synonymous with fuel-efficient family cars for decades now. The Ford Focus, for example was a best-selling family car in that offered superior comfort and efficiency at an affordable price. The company's line of hatchbacks has also been extremely successful, especially in the UK.
