How to Fit the Thule Slide Bar

Choosing the correct fitting components

Before you can begin to fit a Thule roof bar to your vehicle you will need the correct fitting components. These components will usually consist of a fit kit and a foot pack. Some vehicles may require just one of these components but most vehicle makes and models will need both. To correctly fit your roof bar to your vehicle you will need to ensure you choose the corresponding fit kit and foot pack. This is so that the roof bar can be safely secured to your vehicles specific roof shape and size. To find out which components are required for your vehicle you can head over to the roof bar guide on our full website. There, you can simply choose your specific vehicle from a list to find out which fit kits and foot packs will conform to your vehicle.

Once you have the correct fitting components you can then begin to attach your Thule roof bar to your vehicle. The attachment process will vary slightly depending on the fitting components and the vehicle’s make and model. Over the next few weeks we will cover the fitting process of the most popular foot pack and fit kit types, starting with the Thule Evo 7104.

Fitting the slide bar using The Thule Evo Footpack 7104

The Thule Evo 7104 is a footpack designed for vehicles with solid integrated roof rails. Using this foot pack will result in a raised style roof rack suitable for the Thule slide bar. Before attempting to fit your roof bar, make sure to read over the instructions leaflet provided with your foot pack. You will want to familiarise yourself with each component included with your foot pack and slide bar. This will help the fitting process to go more smoothly.

Before installing your roof bar you will need to make sure your car is freshly cleaned and dry. This will help to ensure a secure fit and prevent trapped dirt from causing damage to your car’s paintwork.

Included with your foot pack you will find four Thule feet, four cylinder lock systems, two keys and one ergonomic torque limiter key. You will also need a tape measure and a pair of standard household scissors. Use your key to unlock the cylindrical lock system and remove the end cap from each foot. You will find one key removes the left hand side feet and one removes the right.

Now you will need to prepare your slide bar for loading onto the feet. Use your index finger to lift up the lever at one end of each slide bar. This will release the sliding mechanism and allow you to pull away the inner part of the bar.

Use the allen key provided in the kit to remove the screw and end cap. Now you are able to slide the feet onto your roof bar. In your instructions leaflet you will find the correct distance each foot needs to be from the end of the roof bar for your specific vehicle, fitting kit and roof bar.

Once you have measured the correct distance, you can now slide the feet onto the bar. Secure each foot in place using the screw and allen key provided. You will need to check the instructions leaflet provided to check the correct distance of each foot from the end of the roof bar. This distance will vary depending on the vehicle.

Secure the end caps from the inner part of the bar back in place. Remove the end cap from the outer part of the bar and guide the rubber strip into the channel. It is important to make sure the strip is in place when no accessories are installed onto the bar for the best aerodynamic performance.

Check the instructions leaflet for the required distance between the front roof bar and the end of the front windscreen. The distance between the front and back roof bar will be around 700mm however this may vary depending on the vehicle.

Once you have placed the bar onto your vehicle use the torque limiter key to secure the foot onto the roof rail. Twist the key in a clockwise direction until you hear two ‘clicks’. Now you may place the cap back onto the foot and secure with the key and cylinder lock system.

Check your instructions to ensure the distance between the foot and the end of the roof bar is also correct. Once everything is place give your roof bars a firm shake to ensure all components are secure.
